Referendum, the Democratic Party attacks Rai: “Telemeloni silences the consultation and extinguishes democracy”

Referendum, the Democratic Party attacks Rai: “Telemeloni silences the consultation and extinguishes democracy”

With less than a month to go until the referendum, which will be held on June 8 and 9, the controversy over the lack of visibility that the referendum is being given on television, particularly on Rai networks, is not abating.

Sandro Ruotolo , head of information in the secretariat of the Democratic Party and member of the European Parliament, attacks: "Rai is a public service. We all pay for it. All citizens have the right to be correctly informed and the public radio and television service has the duty to inform correctly. And yet on the referendums of June 8 and 9: total silence. No information, no in-depth analysis. TeleMeloni has turned off the public service. Rai follows the line of Palazzo Chigi and the President of the Senate , the second institutional office: do not vote. We say the opposite: get informed, participate and vote. Democracy cannot be turned off with a remote control".

Also speaking for the Democratic Party, Democratic Party Senator Francesco Verducci , member of the Rai Supervisory Board, said: "Rai is a public service that belongs to all Italians. It is financed directly by citizens through the license fee, and is therefore required to guarantee pluralistic, transparent and objective information, especially during events of democratic importance, such as the referendums of June 8 and 9. And yet, we are witnessing a deafening silence on the part of the public service".

Verducci adds: "Rai is proving to be stingy with news, lacking real in-depth analysis and space for discussion on the referendum questions. This is unacceptable behavior for a public broadcaster, which betrays its own constitutional mandate and ignores the right of citizens to be informed in a comprehensive and impartial manner."
